Stumbling onto it

Stumbling onto it.

I will always remember the line in the movie “the Matrix” where Neo is about to start his combat training.  Keanu Reeves is laying there on that uncomfortable looking chair and he says “Jiujitsu? I am going to learn jiujitsu?”  The operator doesn't say anything he just winks at him and begins the download.  That scene started me on a path.  On a path that I am still traveling today.
Lets start with the background of why I was watching “the Matrix.”  I was about 17 years old.  I had just broken up with my high school sweetheart.  She was this crazy bohemian girl which is something I have always been into.  (she eventually got dreads)  I had a few girlfriends during my high school years but she was the major one.  She was the one I took to prom, snow dance, all those memories were with her.  Plus she was a hot blonde and I made the mistake of drawing confidence from having a hot blonde girlfriend.  I know, rookie mistake, I know.  But, I was really down about it.  I was moping around the house and my dad noticed.  I told him that I had broken up with the girl I took to prom and he looked me in the eye and gave me advice I will never forget.  He said “Well, what are you sad for?  The only difference from yesterday is that now you can date whoever you want.  I didn't really like her anyway.  You acted femme when you were around her.  You don’t even stand up straight anymore.”   So to summarize my situation, my high school flame had just broke up with me and my dad had just called me a pansy.  I decided that was a good time to retire to my room and contemplate my next move.
That night I watched “the matrix” I was inspired by the story of this unathletic, pale looking guy who wears black all the time.  He wakes up one day to find out that his entire life is a lie, he learns jiujitsu, then goes on to save his mentor, the entire world and get the girl in the end.  I decided I needed to do something similar.
At that time in my life I worked as a life guard at the local YMCA.  Everyday I would show up to my job at around 5:45 am then sleep till about 9.  Flirt with whatever girls happened to come to the pool that day.  For a teenage guy it was a dream job.   That day as I was leaving the ymca I saw a sign that would change my life.  It read “Japanese jiujitsu.”  I stopped in my tracks as though the universe itself was calling to me.  I stopped, looked at the sign and was so moved that I uttered out loud the word “yes.” I saw the time, Wednesday at 7pm and knew I would be there.
That Wednesday I walked onto the grappling mats for the first time.  I saw a few other guys there wearing what I thought looked like thick, bleached white pajamas.  I later learned that this is properly called a kimono or “gi.”  The class began and I was very quickly disappointed by the lack of karate chops or kicks.  I learned basic judo techniques of how to fall, break grips, twist an arm, and throw an opponent to the ground.  It was cool….I guess.  But it didn't seem like something I would want to stick with.  About 45 minutes in the instructor announced it was time for “randori.”  I had no idea what this term meant but I saw that people were picking new partners and sizing each other up.  I asked one of the instructors what was happening and he said “it is basically wrestling sparring.  Try to throw your partner or pin him.”  I paired up with a 50 something year old grey belt who was much smaller than me.  I noticed that he had bound his ankle in duct tape and I thought to myself “I hope I don’t hurt this guy.”
The round timer started and we latched on to each other.  I didn't think I was leaning forward but he pushed me then pulled me with perfect timing, hitting a footsweep that made it look like I had jumped over myself just to fall flat on my back.  I grabbed onto his leg from my back and he was happy to keep going.  This cycle of getting thrown and then pinned repeated itself 3 times before the five minute round had passed.  He patted me on the back and without saying a word moved on to another partner.
My next partner was a college kid slightly older than me.  I looked at his white belt and felt my spirits rise.  I was exhausted, but he looked tired too.  I looked around the room and even the most in shape men didn't look fresh.  We grappled for the next five minutes going to the ground a few times more as a result of us tripping over each other than one person getting a clean takedown.  It was exhilarating.  I didn't beat him but what mattered at the time was that he didn't beat me.
I was hooked.  Right at that moment I became hooked on the infinite puzzle that is grappling.  Jiu-jitsu is one of the best things that ever came into my life.  I am a better person physically, mentally, and spiritually because of my time spent on the mats.  There will be more to follow on this with my next entry.

    Mecca III Recap

This last weekends Mecca III, presented by Driller/S.E.G, was a night of great fights!!!  We can’t say enough good things about the match making and production quality of this event!  We would like to thank Jeremy Bjornberg for giving us an opportunity to be part of such a amazing event!
The entire night was stacked with good fights. Ty Bowling, for Spartan, was coming off a win a few months back to fight a very tough opponentAndrew Conway. Ty fought smart and showed great composure, this being only his second fight!  The fight started with both fighters landing shots from standing position.  Ty looked good standing but his natural instinct kicked in as he got a great takedowncontrolling the fight until the bell rang.  The second round started similar to the first, but Ty looked like he wanted to show his ever improving striking skillslanding two big leg kicks before he again took the fight to the mat.  Ty finished on top, raining down blowmaking the referee stop the fight at 2:08 minutes of the second round.  Ty is outstanding physically and we see he is on track for bigger and better things down the road! Congratulations to Ty!
Next up was Chase Waldon Vs. Jordan Fass.  Chase has made major improvements mentally and is really maturing into a better all around fighter.  Chase has always shown great physical attributes and workextremely hard in the gym.  The fight went back and forth with both men getting the upper hand at different pointthroughout the event.  Chase really turned up the heat in the second round, aiming for submission after submission.  On the feet Chase looked great as well. He really showed all aspects of the MMA game in this fight! Chase won via unanimous decision, landing him the fight of the night bonus!  Congrats to Chase and Jordan Fass for a incredible fight!
Codie Kalher was originally scheduled to fight Nick Compton for the MN Academy, however because of injuries Nick was unfortunately forced to pull out of the fight.  Zach Juusola was able to step in and took Nicks place.  Codie showed a warrior – “never say die spirit in this one!  He took damage with some very powerful liver kicks that would put a normal man on the floor, but continued to fight.  Codie threw very hard shots throughout the fight and did a great job listening to his corner.  There was a lot of blood in the middle of the fight due to a broken nose, however again Codie would not quit.  He kept coming forward.  However Codie could not continue the pace, leaving the referee to step in and end the contest at 1:44 minutes of the second round due to TKO.  Codie is a true warrior and in time, with his skills and abilities, we will see him on a big stage for sure.
I would also like to acknowledge Zach for really growing as a fighter and coming back strong after the long layoff he’s had.  As a coach, I was honored to have my student fight a competitor like Zach.
The main event featured Dan, “The King,” Kiser Vs. Billy, “The Kid,” Christianson. This fight had fireworks! The fight started out with Billy getting the better of Dan on the feet, working his way to the ground.  Billy looked strong and very aggressive when dropping Dan and he then controlled the rest of the round.  In the second round Dan looked very composed and relaxed, even after losing the first round.  Dan used his reach to strike and tried to stay out of shooting range.  Billy then took Dan down and looked to be in control, but again Kiser looked very relaxed and started looking to attempt submissions.  Kiser threw up a triangle, switched to an armbar and then back to the triangle.  The triangle was very tight and Dan controlled Billy legs, making it very hard to escape.  Dan won the match via triangle choke in round two.Dan has an uncanny ability to keep his cool in very difficult times of a fight.  I would love to take credit for this mental toughness, but he is truly blessed with a fighters heart.   Billy Christianson is a very tough opponent that’s improved at all aspects of the game.
We would also like to say Congrats to Greg Nelson and Team Academy for their accomplishments.  We want to stress that when SMA fighters compete with Academy Fighters it’s out of respect and not out of spite.  We have a great respect for the MN Academy and all of their fighters.
We are a young school, but we’re going to be the one of the two stand out schools in the state of MN!!

    Mecca 3 Jan 11th

    Mecca 3
    Sat Jan 11th
    Epic night club
    118 5th st
    Minneapolis MN
    Fights start at 7:00 PM

Spartan Martial Arts is very proud to announce Mecca 3 coming up Jan 11th at Epic Night Club in Minneapolis MN.

Fighting from Spartan Martial Arts for this event are:

    Codie Kalher vs. Nick Compton
    Dan Kiser vs. Billy Christianson
    Ty Bowling vs. Erdmann
    Chase Waldon vs. Fass

Codie, “The Dream Smasher,” Kalher is coming off a huge win over Mikey Zimmer! Now Codie is fighting another very tough MN academy member, Nick Compton.  Everyone at Spartan and Codie are very honored and feel the utmost respect for the MN academy and all of their accomplishments.  This will be a great fight and Codie is looking to put on a great performance for the crowd!  Codie’s camp has been going great and we continue to see improvement night after night.  This kid has a ton of potential and is looking to take this sport to the upper limits!  He has been a great addition to the Spartan MMA team and we look forward to his upcoming fight vs. Nick Compton!
Another exciting fight on this card is Dan “The King” Kiser vs. Billy Christianson.  Dan Kiser is the current Impact FC (North Dakota) champion at 145lbs and is looking to make an impact in the Twin Cities.  He is fighting Billy Christianson who owns a 9-3 record and a win over a teammate of Dan Kiser, Courtney Buck.  Dan’s striking has always been crisp and sharp but he has been working on both his grappling and his strength and conditioning specifically for this fight.
Ty Bowling will try to keep his undefeated streak going when he steps into the cage to fight Josh Erdmann.  Ty has brought a wealth of wrestling knowledge and background to the team and his striking is looking better and better each day!  All of his teammates at Spartan are excited to see this fight.  Kyle “The Spartan” Todd says, “It's a step up in competition for Ty. Josh has a lot of fights and plenty of cage experience. It will be a test for bowling but i see him coming out with a W in a decisive finish”.
With a big win last month in Racine, WI at the Wisconsin Extreme Cage fighting promotion, Chase Waldon looks to keep his 4 fight winning streak alive as well!  Chase is one of the most physically talented athletes at Spartan Martial Arts and will look to show his skills and abilities at Mecca 3!
